Just heard on CNN this morning that we prescribe enough pain meds in the US to give every adult hourly meds for one month. They also mentioned the US accounts for 80% of world’s pain med consumption yet we represent only 5% of the world population. Interestingly, introduction often begins to address back pain which by the way costs america something like $80B annually. With the rise of prescription drug overdose leading to death (more than heroin and cocaine combined) choosing to “Live Better” is imperative. Pain meds have there place but there are other options for dealing with back and neck pain including active coping strategies, graded exposure to desensitize pain pathways in the body, acupuncture, “deflaming”, manual therapy and chiropractic.
